Direct answer

Match the talent to the operator's repeatable job: Grit or A Life of Labor for frontliners, Cold-Blooded or The Bigger They Are for deliberate burst damage, Anticipation for flexible survival, and Espionage or Thievery only on operators who will complete many combat missions. Because recruited operators can be respecced, prioritize role fit over the recruit's starting talent.

Recommended order

Do these in order

  1. 01

Decide whether the operator's main job is frontline survival, burst damage, control, support, or campaign economy.

  2. 02

Prefer a benefit that triggers in most deployments over a powerful condition your build rarely creates.

  3. 03

For Assault, Heavy, or Soldier frontliners, compare Grit and A Life of Labor first.

  4. 04

For Sharpshooter or crit-focused Scoundrel builds, compare Cold-Blooded and boss-damage options.

  5. 05

Use the Personnel respec route after recruitment if the starting talent does not match the final class.

Frontline classes — Assault, Heavy, Soldier

Grit provides repeatable protection and additional health as it improves, while A Life of Labor combines durability with melee and critical-damage growth. Taunt can reinforce a Heavy built to control attention, but it asks the rest of the build to survive the pressure it creates.

Precision classes — Sharpshooter and Gunslinger

Cold-Blooded supplies guaranteed critical pressure on a limited cadence, making it easier to plan a decisive shot. The Bigger They Are focuses on elites and bosses. Gunslinger can also value Anticipation or Grit when staying active matters more than a single damage spike.

Flexible classes — Scout, Medic, Scoundrel

Anticipation is broadly useful because avoiding an attack preserves tempo. Scout can pair mobility with Sabotage, while Medic or Scout operators who deploy constantly can turn Espionage or Thievery into campaign resources. Do not take an economy talent on a bench operator—the effect depends on completing combat missions.

Talent choice is reversible

Hands-on retail reporting confirms that recruited operators' talents and classes can be changed through the Personnel respec flow. That makes visual preference and roster need more important at recruitment than accepting a mismatched talent forever.

Compact class-to-talent shortlist

Start comparison with: Assault—A Life of Labor or Grit; Gunslinger—Anticipation, Grit, or A Life of Labor; Heavy—Taunt, Grit, or Anticipation; Medic—Anticipation, Espionage, or Thievery; Scoundrel—Anticipation or Cold-Blooded; Scout—Anticipation, Sabotage, Espionage, or Thievery; Sharpshooter—Cold-Blooded or The Bigger They Are; Soldier—A Life of Labor or Grit. Test against the operator's actual loop rather than treating the list as a universal tier.
